I have had an idea for a project for a while now and thus far I have allowed time to get in the way. To start 2013 I have made a commitment to myself to “make time” for some of the personal passions and projects I have been letting sit on the shelf. Needless to say I was very excited to kick off a project yesterday with the incredible Kyla Gagnon. After a few minutes with Kyla it is easy to see she is truly beautiful “Inside and Out.” So what’s the project, you ask? I will be taking inspiration from iconic, recognizable images that were photographed with men and shooting them with women and vice versa. My hope is to portray the women in my images as strong, independent and beautiful. With the help of Erin Bradley and her hair and makeup wizardry, along with the good people of Simoes Automotive I believe we achieved our goal. When I contacted Norbert Simoes and inquired (with very little notice) about doing a photoshoot as described above, surprisingly there were no objections, despite their incredibly busy schedule. The shop phone was ringing more then usual with neighboring business’ inquiring “What is going on over there?” As well, vehicles were repeatedly driving slowly by, very slowly. Norbert joked that he might start paying us to do photoshoots there as he had never attracted so much attention to the shop. As one of the workmen mentioned, Simoes new ad will read: “Actual Mechanics may not appear exactly as shown.” Regardless, if you are not taking your car to Simoes for any of your mechanical needs, you’re crazy! I met Norbert 10 years ago when I was a punk kid in photography college looking to fulfill an assignment of photographing people in their element. Norbert has become a good friend and epitomizes the term “Trustworthy mechanic.”
So here is the first of a series I call “The Highest Form of Flattery” This is a Herb Ritts’ inspired image. Thanks for checking it out, stay tuned for more, and please leave any questions or comments as I would love to hear your feedback.
